Composition: Sandwiches and New Futures after Prison

Patrick W. Berry is an associate professor of writing and rhetoric at Syracuse University. He is the author of Doing Time, Writing Lives: Refiguring Literacy and Higher Education in Prison (2018, Southern Illinois University Press). He completed his doctoral work in the Center for Writing Studies and Department of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the faculty director of Project Mend, an initiative with the Center for Community Alternatives that focuses on writing and publishing as a means by which formerly incarcerated individuals and their families can reimagine themselves, their communities, and their futures. This work is made possible through a Humanities New York Post-Incarceration Humanities Partnership, which is generously supported by the Mellon Foundation.

Sensory Friendly performances provide a welcoming environment that lets all patrons express themselves freely without judgement or inhibition. These live theatre experiences invite autistic individuals as well as those living with ADHD, dementia, and other sensory sensitivities to enjoy the performance in a “shush-free” zone.

Pre-show event featuring Our Vegan Corner + Hope Cafe

The pre-show information fair will bring together resources from various organizations dedicated to providing assistance, opportunities, empowerment and advocacy for individuals who have been previously incarcerated. Attendees will have the chance to learn more about the work that these organizations do and how they can contribute, and sample food from two local mission-driven restaurants.
